Maple Bacon Challah French Toast

Ingredients

  • 8 slices challah bread, about ¾-inch thick
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk (or half-and-half for a creamier texture)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter for cooking

Candied Maple Bacon

  • 8 slices thick-cut bacon
  • 3 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • ½ tsp black pepper (optional)

Homemade Whipped Cream

  • 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Cooking Directions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top.
  • In a small bowl, mix together maple syrup, brown sugar, and black pepper (if using).
  • Lay bacon slices flat on the rack or foil. Brush each slice with the maple-sugar mixture on both sides.
  • Bake for 18–22 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until bacon is caramelized and crispy.
  • Keep an eye on it in the last few minutes to prevent burning.
  • Let cool slightly. The bacon will continue to crisp as it cools.

    Make the French Toast

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  • Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add a bit of butter.
  • Dip each slice of challah into the egg mixture, coating both sides. Let the excess drip off before placing in the skillet.
  • Cook each slice for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and slightly crisp.
  • Keep warm on a baking sheet in the oven while you cook the rest.

    Whipped Cream

  • In a chilled bowl, combine cold heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.
  • Use a hand mixer or whisk to beat until soft peaks form (about 2–3 minutes with a mixer). Do not over whip.
  • Keep chilled until ready to serve.

    To Serve

  • Plate 2 slices of warm challah French toast.
  • Top with a generous dollop of whipped cream.
  • Add 2 slices of candied maple bacon on the side or crumbled on top.
  • Drizzle with extra maple syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon or powdered sugar if desired.
